The iPhone 11 (which Apple phone is the best) isn’t the highest-spec Apple phone, but it supersedes the iPhone XR ‘budget flagship’ in better ways to become the standout phone of its generation in terms of sheer value.
True, it misses out on a telephoto lens, but like with the Samsung Galaxy S10e, a coupling of main and ultrawide lenses serve most photo needs. While it doesn’t get an OLED display, its LCD screen at least allows the phone to keep its best-in-generation battery life crown. And it even gets a bit more RAM – up to 4GB from its predecessor’s 3GB.
Add in iOS 13 and all the new tweaks coming in the iPhone 11 series and this phone is a lean, mean, photo-taking machine, and all for this cheaper price.
Unlike the bigger 11 Pro, the iPhone 11 (which Apple phone is the best) has a 6.1-inch display that uses LCD technology rather than OLED, calling it ‘Liquid Retina’. That means you won’t get the richness of colors, nor the deep blacks and bright whites, that you will find on handsets with more advanced screen tech. You are still getting a decent display here though, as Apple has crafted and calibrated the screen to be clear, bright, and sharp, despite only having a resolution of 1792 x 828 pixels.
The iPhone 11’s (which Apple phone is the best) Liquid Retina display might not be the highest-res out there, but it’s clear and bright. That’s lower than the 2436 x 1125 of the iPhone 11 Pro, yet you don’t feel like you are getting a low-res screen here – the brightness and strong color reproduction see to that.
What’s less attractive is the thicker border around the outside of the display. These days we are seeing a lot of phones, including ones with a lower price tag than the iPhone 11 (which Apple phone is the best), come with edge-to-edge displays, and with no notch at the top. Apple still clearly believes that this is necessary to house the front-facing camera and advanced FaceID sensor to let users get into their phone.
In terms of day to day use though, the iPhone 11’s (which Apple phone is the best) screen to be clear, its very bright, and easy to see even outdoors on bright days. It can run up to 625 nits of brightness, according to Apple, and that’s enough for us in most scenarios – blinding if you look at it on full brightness when opening your eyes in the morning.
In terms of cinematic prowess, there is no high dynamic range (HDR) playback here – so you get something called ‘Extended Dynamic Range’ – which doesn’t have the same capability as an OLED iPhone at playing back top-end movies.
FaceID has also had a much-needed upgrade – the field of view of the camera has been improved a fair bit, so you can glance at your phone from your seat and unlock it. While you may still need to move your face closer or lift the phone slightly, it’s a big upgrade from what debuted on the iPhone X two years ago. A couple of other new features we liked (not exclusive to the iPhone 11, but helpful nonetheless): swipe typing when using the keyboard, new Memoji stickers, and control of the Wi-Fi / Bluetooth options from Control Center.
The iPhone 11 (which Apple phone is the best) wasn’t quite so rapid across all tasks – saving photos or video to the camera roll sometimes took a second or two, but then again you’re processing large amounts of data (especially for Night mode or 4K video), so that’s perhaps to be expected; however, some people might expect performance to be instant all the time.
iPhone 11 Pro
The iPhone 11 Pro (which Apple phone is the best) is a more advanced smartphone than the base iPhone 11, but it isn’t the best iPhone just because its price is a big step up too.
Sure, the smaller screen is one-hand-friendly, the screen quality is a bonus, and it’s Apple’s most affordable handset with three rear cameras, so it’s a decent phone, all in all, that’s why it’s at the second spot on the list of best iPhones! But money is a concern for most people when they are looking for a new smartphone, and the big price step-up may be questionable for most people when you put the stats side-by-side with the iPhone 11 (which Apple phone is the best).
The gadget (which Apple phone is the best) has 4 cameras with a trio at the back. Its rear camera trifecta offers wide, 2x optically zoomed and all-encompassing ultra-wide perspectives, the latter being a first for the iPhone.
It’s fascinating to see how far along HDR has progressed when you snap a photo with the front-facing iPhone 11 Pro camera (which Apple phone is the best). It’s 12MP (up from 7MP) and packs in a lot of detail. Both front and back cameras record 4K video at 60fps (you could have also been waiting for 4K on the front camera for some time) and slo-mo video has finally come to the selfie cam. No, ‘Selfies’ won’t change your life and they’re not called that in the UI. But we did have some fun testing the feature at 120fps in 1080p. Know that you can get a much slower 240fps 1080p video out of the main camera, though.
Apple redesigned its iPhone camera app, surfacing options to take photos in the 16:9 aspect ratio along with 4:3 (normal) and square (formerly a dedicated mode you’d always accidentally find yourself in). Great start.
You can hold the shutter button from photo mode to quickly record a video (similar to Instagram and Snapchat interfaces), which makes transitioning between capturing photos and videos with one-hand a piece of cake. You can still take burst shots by sliding the shutter button to the left or keep recording video by sliding it right.
All iOS 13 devices have better editing tools across photos and videos, offering control sliders for sharpness, noise reduction, definition, and tint. Best of all, Live Photos will remain intact after your edits, giving you one less reason to open Adobe Lightroom.
iPhone 11 Pro Max
The iPhone 11 Pro Max (which Apple phone is the best) is not only a confusing shift in the naming convention. It’s the biggest, fastest, baddest iPhone out there. It’s also the most expensive at $1,099 starting price but cheaper at Amazon, which only goes up if you expand storage.
Not much has changed from the iPhone XS Max (which Apple phone is the best), aside from the upgraded camera suite – but then again, adding an ultrawide lens is a big upgrade. The photo software has been upgraded, too, and switching between zoom levels is far smoother here than in other phones.
The battery level has been improved a staggering 4 hours over the iPhone XS Max (which Apple phone is the best), according to Apple. And if you can get beyond the truly weird-looking triple-lens rear camera block, this is truly the most powerful iPhone out there.
In terms of hardware, the key difference is the addition of the ultra-wide camera, making it three cameras on the rear of the phone. These sit proud from the back of the iPhone 11 Pro Max (which Apple phone is the best), with the glass square surrounding them matching the color of the phone itself, which helps to minimize the visual impact of three prominent black holes on the rear.
What you’ve got here are a ‘normal’ wide-angle lens, a telephoto lens, and a new ultra-wide one. The telephoto option zooms you 2x closer to your subject, and the ultra-wide-angle lens enables you to cram twice as much of the scene in front of you into the frame.
All three cameras pack 12MP sensors, which is pretty standard for most smartphones these days, allowing for a good balance between pixel size (to capture more light) and resolution (for capturing plenty of detail). Video recording has also been improved, with the Pro Max (which Apple phone is the best) now able to capture 4K at 60 frames per second (fps). This means you’re getting smoother footage thanks to more information being captured, but it’s worth remembering that this will fill up the storage on your iPhone that much quicker.
Unveiled in April 2020, the new iPhone SE (which Apple phone is the best) may look like an older iPhone but it comes with a lot of benefits over the rest of the range. The chief reason you may want to buy this is it’s the cheaper latest iPhone you can buy from Apple right now. It comes with the same design as the iPhone 8, but this has upgraded internals such as an A13 Bionic chipset that is the same we have seen powering the three phones you will find above in this list.
The design of the phone is familiar to anyone that’s used an iPhone recently – unless you have not held a handset from Apple since 2013 then you will have seen this 4.7-inch frame before, complete with bezels top and bottom and a home button with a fingerprint scanner built-in. It’s now seen as the ‘smaller’ iPhone form factor given the all-screen designs of the more recent models, and it’s both more lightweight and pocketable than anything from the iPhone 11 range.
It’s pleasingly water-resistant, but does have some drawbacks thanks to the older design: it lacks a headphone jack at the bottom, and because the display technology is slightly dated though, it can suffer in bright light when you’re trying to watch videos or the like. It also comes with a Touch ID fingerprint scanner, which is something we haven’t seen on recent iPhones. The camera is good on this phone, but won’t compete with the very top iPhones and it has an average battery life too. Overall, if you are looking for a cheaper alternative to the devices you have read about above you will love the iPhone SE (which Apple phone is the best).
Apple has taken a gamble that it can improve photo quality using image processing powered by the A13 Bionic chipset. Spoiler alert: the gamble has paid off handsomely. The new iPhone SE (which Apple phone is the best) can often stand up to the iPhone 11 Pro Max in terms of general snapping, and only struggles when it comes to the areas where the hardware is lacking. The same 12MP camera and f/1.8 aperture remain, so it seems that there’s very little chance to the sensor.
Believe it or not, the iPhone XS (which Apple phone is the best) was once Apple’s best ‘small’ phone. It has a 5.8-inch screen, so it’s more one-hand-friendly than a lot of the larger phones on this list, but it still packs a punch in terms of spec. The iPhone XS (which Apple phone is the best) may be a little older now, but it has a Smart HDR-capable 12MP camera, enhanced TrueDepth front-facing camera, and a fast A12 Bionic chipset, exactly like the larger iPhone XS Max. This all-screen phone is pretty much the iPhone XS Max in a smaller form factor. It does have a smaller battery than the Max and obviously a smaller screen, but you will still capture the same great photos and videos on this device and play the same games. Plus, it’s cheaper that is used to be when it was the latest and greatest iPhone.
Apple’s latest operating system, which will be available to the iPhone XS (which Apple phone is the best), brings many new features like Dark Mode and a range of app speed increases, so you can make the most of your iPhone experience. One change that is easy to spot is the new color: the gold variant is more mocha than anything else, with a touch of copper in the shade, and brings another option in addition to the Space Gray and silver options. The A12 chipset brings a step up in graphical performance too – gaming is getting ever closer to console-level graphics.
However, alongside the iPhone 11 range announcement, Apple confirmed that it would no longer sell the iPhone XS – it’s being dropped from the company’s line, but that doesn’t mean you can’t buy it. Retailers and carriers will still stock it for a while to come, so if this review gets you excited to own it, that’s still a possibility.
iPhone XS Max
This was once the very best iPhone if your hands and wallets were large enough. It has an expansive 6.5-inch OLED screen with HDR10 support to make the colors pop. It’s the perfect phone if you want a giant screen, but it has now been replaced by the iPhone 11 Pro Max I have mentioned above.
Behind that huge screen is a dual-lens 12MP camera. Apple outfitted it with Smart HDR and increased the sensor size to capture larger pixels. Don’t let that static 12MP number fool you. The iPhone XS Max (like the XS) has depth-sensing capabilities for adjustable bokeh (background blur) during and after a shot. The TrueDepth camera returns with faster Face ID recognition, and your 7MP selfies get better depth control and Smart HDR, too. This is now cheaper than at launch too, so it may be a good option if you want lots of specs but don’t want to get the absolute latest iPhone.
What’s more impressive is that the XS Max (which Apple phone is the best) manages to squeeze a huge 6.5-inch display into a body that’s a touch shorter and narrower (at 157.5 x 77.4mm) than the iPhone 8 Plus, which only boasts a 5.5-inch display. The steel frame around the outside and the new formulation of glass on the front and rear – which is tougher than the glass on the iPhone X – give the iPhone XS Max a supremely premium look and feel, while its resistance to dust and water has also been enhanced.
Apple has upped the protection to IP68, enabling the iPhone XS Max (which Apple phone is the best) to be submerged to a depth of up to two meters for 30 minutes without suffering any ill effects. Apple claims it’s tested the protection in several liquids, including salt water, chlorinated water, milk, wine, and beer, although we wouldn’t advise purposefully exposing the handset to any of these.
The SIM card tray continues to be located below this key, but there’s a new feature inside the iPhone XS Max (and XS). The handset is dual SIM enabled, with an eSIM embedded inside the handset.
This allows you to insert a SIM from the carrier of your choice, and then enable the eSIM on a different plan or carrier. It’s worth noting that not all carriers support eSIM technology, and availability varies by region, so make sure you check before signing up for anything.
Apple introduced a new gold finish for both the iPhone XS Max and XS, and it’s a little richer than the more subtle gold finish option for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. If you find the gold a bit too much, the iPhone XS Max (which Apple phone is the best) also comes in Silver and Space Gray.
The iPhone XR is a great upgrade for the average consumer who doesn’t want to pay for the most expensive iPhone money can buy. This was Apple’s ‘cheap’ iPhone until the iPhone SE 2020 came along.
It stands out with a variety of iPhone XR colors: Blue, White, Black, Yellow, Coral, Red. This contrasts heavily with the rather muted colors of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. Yet it shares the same internal specs: Apple’s A12 Bionic chipset and a 12MP dual-lens camera with a single lens on the back.
You don’t get the dual-lens camera as you do on a higher-tier iPhone, so you miss out on telephoto shots. But Smart HDR is the real perk to taking great photos and that’s why it’s here.
It’s cheaper, it’s more colorful and it has a big 6.1-inch screen. That’s enough for most people, especially those who aren’t insistent on an impressive OLED screen.
So if you’re looking for the latest Apple tech and design language in an affordable package, look no further than the iPhone XR. If you’re loving your iPhones XR (which Apple phone is the best) or considering buying one, it’s not been left behind as the phone received the latest iOS 13 update – which means it runs the same software as the iPhone 11 range and new SE.
While the iPhone XR (which Apple phone is the best) offers the same ‘standard’ lens as the XS, it lacks the telephoto second sensor, so has to do some fancy tricks with software to compensate.
This means you aren’t able to zoom in as far with the XR, as the telephoto lens offers (relatively) lossless photography at two times zoom, while portrait mode, where the background is blurred out, isn’t as effective.
The iPhone X (which Apple phone is the best) is as impressive as it is expensive, but if you want a great modern iPhone without buying a newer device, this is the one to get today.
It has a large all-screen display, except for a notch cutout at the top that houses a new TrueDepth Camera. This takes selfies to another level and can also map your face to an iPhone X-exclusive Animoji. If you don’t know what that is by now you probably won’t care.
The iPhone X (which Apple phone is the best) is Apple’s 10th-anniversary smartphone and has just about everything iPhone users have been asking for, from a more forward-leaning design to faster specs and new features. You will just have to get used to Face ID instead of reaching for that non-existent fingerprint sensor.
The first thing you’ll notice about the new iPhone is hard to miss: the new screen blazes into your eyes the second you pick up the handset. The 5.8-inch OLED display is, quite simply, the best thing Apple has ever crammed into an iPhone, or it was until the iPhone XS arrived. It’s leaps ahead of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus for so many reasons: the sharpness, the quality, the fact that it fills the whole front of the phone, and the color reproduction.
It’s also using a new, longer, screen, but while it looks larger than the iPhone 8 Plus’ 5.5-inch display on paper, it’s only marginally bigger in terms of actual screen real estate – it’s just stretched upwards, so it’s taller, not wider.
While the iPhone X (which Apple phone is the best) launched with iOS 11, it’s now been updated to iOS 12 (or iOS 12.1.4 to be precise). This added things like grouped notifications, personalized Memoji, additional Animoji and emoji, Siri Shortcuts, Group FaceTime, Screen time reports, and a whole lot more.
It’s now already updated again to iOS 13, bringing with it features like a Dark Mode and a new Find My Device app, but for now, if you’re using an iPhone X (which Apple phone is the best) you will be using iOS 12.
iPhone 11 – (which Apple phone is the best)
Buy it if you want a 2019 iPhone at cheaper price. OK, it’s not cheap, but it’s by far the most cost-effective phone we have seen from Apple since the iPhone SE – and it’s far more powerful.
If, you want longer-lasting battery life. The battery life on the iPhone XR is good, and that’s continued with the iPhone 11 (which Apple phone is the best). The iPhone 11 Pro Max is slightly better here, but you can buy with confidence on the 11.
If, you want a phone with a very strong camera. The iPhone 11’s (which Apple phone is the best) night mode, two lenses, and forthcoming Deep Fusion combine to make a very competent snapper – almost matching what’s available on the more expensive Pro range. iPhone 11 – (which Apple phone is the best) is the best Apple iPhone bang for your money
Don’t buy it if you want the most powerful iPhone out. While the iPhone 11 (which Apple phone is the best) has got some grunt, it doesn’t quite match the raw power of the 11 Pro range – I doubt you will notice much of an issue at all, but one to note if that spec matters to you.
Don’t if you want brilliant battery life. This might sound confusing given the above point about great battery, but while the iPhone 11 (which Apple phone is the best) has good longevity, there are plenty of phones on the market that lasts longer.
Don’t if you need a huge capacity for media and apps. The iPhone 11’s (which Apple phone is the best) storage options top out at 256GB – that’s going to be fine for nearly everyone, but if you love a terabyte of space, that’s not on offer here.
The iPhone 11 (which Apple phone is the best) – the successor to the iPhone XR – has gone from secondary handset to firmly take the limelight. Offering most of the top-end camera technology of the powerful iPhone 11 Pro, it packs good spec and manages to do so for a lower cost than many would expect – this is the one to go for if you want a good value new iPhone.
iPhone 11 Pro – (which Apple phone is the best)
Buy it if, you want the best new iPhone in a small size. I love the fact that you can wrap our hands around this 5.8-inch iPhone. Moving from the XS Max. And you still get all of the power of the 11 Pro Max.
If, you use that telephoto camera lens. While you are a big fan of the iPhone 11 (which Apple phone is the best) for everyday buyers due to its cheaper price, if you are going to use the telephoto lens or are partial to an OLED screen, these perks are exclusive to the Pro.
If, your night photos have been looking grimy. The camera is where Apple made the most progress, and its night mode is hands-down our favorite. It brightens up dark scenes and applies the effect automatically.
Don’t buy if, you are not into phone photography. Some people don’t use the camera very much. Others rely on mirrorless cameras. Apple put the most work into the camera, so if you don’t need that, look to an older iPhone or wait.
If, you want the best battery life. The iPhone 11 Pro (which Apple phone is the best) lasts a day-and-a-half with heavy use and, at times, low-power mode turned on. That’s fantastic, but you’ will still find better battery life on the 11 Pro Max.
If , you can wait for the iPhone 5G. Have an iPhone XS or XR and wonder if you need to upgrade? No, unless you get a deal. The XS and XR are great phones, and if you can hold out for it, the next iPhone is poised to bring big changes.
The iPhone 11 Pro (which Apple phone is the best) is Apple’s most powerful phone that comes in a one-hand-friendly size. It has a triple-lens camera to capture best-in-class photos and videos from a variety of perspectives, a new night mode to enhance low-light photography and extra battery life prowess. Even if the design hasn’t changed, this is the camera and battery upgrade iPhone users have been after. iPhone 11 Pro (which Apple phone is the best) is nearly the best, but a bit too pricey.
iPhone 11 Pro Max – (which Apple phone is the best)
Buy it if, you want the very best iPhone (which Apple phone is the best) out there. There’s no better iPhone on the market in terms of performance or spec – the battery life, the cinematic quality of movies, the overall punch of the processor. this is the top smartphone gadget (which Apple phone is the best) from Apple.
If, you enjoy watching movies on the go. The combination of the bright screen, Dolby VIsion, and enhanced OLED capabilities make watching top-end movies a great experience – and Apple will automatically upgrade your collection to the best quality available.
If, you need power fused with good battery life The iPhone 11 Pro Max (which Apple phone is the best) does just that: combines the best power of any iPhone with the longest battery life we have seen from an Apple handset (although it seems to vie with the iPhone 11 in our testing for that honor).
Don’t buy if, you’re watching the pennies. A phone that starts at $1,099 isn’t going to be everyone’s idea of a must-have device – if you are on a budget, consider the iPhone 11 or even models from 2018.
If, you want the most advanced features. While this is the most advanced iPhone, there are plenty of other features that are missing here but which other brands offer: reverse wireless charging, more cameras, or 5G. If you want all the very latest smartphone features, Apple’s offerings are rarely the place to find them.
If, you don’t really need the Pro version.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max (which Apple phone is the best) is the best that Apple can cram into a smartphone – the high-end screen, powerful speakers, upgraded processor all support the huge upgrades to the camera. However, this phone is really for the Apple fan or someone that needs that extra lens or a touch more battery life – the iPhone 11 feels like it offers better value. iPhone 11 Pro Max – (which Apple phone is the best) is simply identified as; Big phone, best phone and top price handset.
iPhone SE – (which Apple phone is the best)
Buy it if, you want a new, great-value iPhone. This is easily the best-value handset from Apple yet. Not only is it the cheapest model, but it comes with Touch ID, a powerful engine that makes it fast and responsive under the finger, and a decent camera, all for nearly half the price of an iPhone 11.
If, you are to keep it for a few years. The iPhone SE (which Apple phone is the best) from 2016 was popular because it offered something novel at the time: a new iPhone for less cash than the existing models, and that same idea has been offered with the latest model. With the iPhone SE 2020, you are likely to still get upgrades and security features for three to four years, which will appeal to many who aren’t as bothered about having the very latest features.
If, you want a lightweight handset. If you want a new iPhone but don’t want weight in the pocket, then this is the model to go for. It’s far less weighty and is easier to wrap your fingers around than some models in the range right now.
Don’t buy if, you want the best pics from an iPhone. While the iPhone SE 2020 (which Apple phone is the best) camera is strong, it’s not the strongest in the range, and it struggles in a few areas, such as exposure levels and depth of field effects. However, it’s still mightily impressive for the money and will impress those upgrading from much older phones.
If, you value long battery life. Still not sure why Apple has stuck with the battery life from the iPhone 8, but it has. It’s usable, but given that the newer models are now able to much more easily last a day in normal use, we expected more here – this is very much ‘stereotypical iPhone battery life’.
If, you love watching movies on the go. The screen on the iPhone SE 2020 (which Apple phone is the best) dates back a few years, being the same one that was used on the iPhone 8. It’s not stellar in bright light, and it lacks the sharpness of newer screens, although the speakers are punchy to help improve the movie-watching experience.
This is the phone to get if you just want a new iPhone that will last you a few years, but don’t want to pay a lot for it. The iPhone SE 2020 (which Apple phone is the best) offers ‘decent but not top-end’ performance: a good camera, enough power, a great App Store to plunder, and a lighter iPhone than recent models. Battery life and screen tech could be better, the headphone jack is a miss, but – for the price – this is one of the best iPhones Apple has ever made. iPhone SE (which Apple phone is the best) is the choice for those who want a cheaper iPhone.
iPhone XS – (which Apple phone is the best)
Compared to the iPhone X, the speakers on the iPhone XS (which Apple phone is the best) are more powerful and ‘wider’ in sound, the camera has been enhanced with Smart HDR, the battery management is better and the chipset is far more powerful inside. These are all just tweaks though, and it was smart from Apple to remove the iPhone X from the sale, as that would have been a far more attractive option before the launch of the iPhone 11 range. iPhone XS – (which Apple phone is the best) is another option for those looking for something compact.
iPhone XS Max – (which Apple phone is the best).
Apple finally delivers an iPhone with a huge screen, and for movie-watching, game-playing fans the iPhone XS Max is an exciting new addition to the range. It certainly costs a lot, but if you can get past the price (which many won’t be able to) the XS Max offers up a super, supersized experience. iPhone XS Max – (which Apple phone is the best) is still a big yet a speedy phone.
iPhone XR– (which Apple phone is the best)
If you’re looking for confirmation that you’re not going to lose out massively by going for the cheaper iPhone, I can confirm that you’ll be fine. Yes, you won’t be able to stretch the handset to the absolute limits of iPhone performance, but for most that won’t be an issue.
If you want the very best camera though, and you really crave the ‘wow’ factor that comes with an awesome portrait mode snap, then this might not be enough phone for you. Equally, if luxury, and the very best-looking iPhone, are what you need, again you should probably upgrade to the XS range.
The person that will enjoy the iPhone XR is someone who’s due an upgrade or is struggling along with an iPhone 6S or iPhone 7, and wants to future-proof themselves a little.
The camera will be an upgrade, the battery life a welcome salve, and the overall design a step forward. With a range of colors on offer, this is the more budget- and fashion-conscious iPhone buyer’s handset of choice; if you’re ensconced in the Apple way of things then you’ll find a lot to enjoy on the iPhone XR.
If you’re looking for an affordable iPhone, the iPhone XR (which Apple phone is the best) is a strong contender boasting the latest software, enough power, and surprisingly good battery life… for an iPhone. With the introduction of the iPhone 11, the XR price has dropped further, making it great value for money. iPhone XR – (which Apple phone is the best) is the best iPhone for those looking for great battery life.
iPhone X – (which Apple phone is the best)
The iPhone X (which Apple phone is the best) was a huge gamble from Apple, yet one that paid off six months into our testing. Losing the home button and altering the design was a dangerous move, but one that was sorely needed after years of similarity and the premium design, extra power, all-screen front mix together to create – by far – the best iPhone Apple’s ever made. It’s impossible to give a perfect score to something that costs this much – but this is the closest to smartphone perfection Apple has ever got. iPhone X – (which Apple phone is the best) is the iPhone that changed the range.
